For The Innocent Children

In Their Memory…

Twenty innocent children dead.

Murdered right before Christmas.

A cruel juxtaposition of death at a time

we celebrate birth…the story of an

innocent child born to be murdered,

but for a purpose.

But what was the purpose of this?

Twenty innocent children dead.

No good reason.

Not any that I can think of.

I can’t stop thinking about

what President Obama said:

These are our children.

It doesn’t matter if you do not know their names.

It doesn’t matter if you have never met one of them.

These children are our children.

We are grieving their loss,

and what they might have brought to our world.

We cannot bring them back.

They are lost to us now.

Forever.

What can we do?

Is there anything we can do?

For them?  In their memory?

How can we act so as to not let them down?

What would we have done for them?

If we had known them, taught them,

cared for them, coached them, loved them?

Made sure they had enough to eat?

Made sure they had a safe place to sleep?

Made sure they had a good education and

a chance to use their talents and gifts?

Made sure that even if they didn’t get everything

they wanted, they got everything they needed?

Made sure they knew they were loved?

Made sure they knew they were valued?

Made sure they knew they made a difference?

Can we do this, even now, in their name?

For all the innocent children?

For the innocent children in our world?

For the innocent children in our country?

For the innocent children in our state?

For the innocent children in our town?

For the innocent children in our neighborhood?

For the innocent children who live next door?

Let a child show us the way.

Let these twenty children show us the way.
