The Decision-Making Stream

Row, Row, Row Your Boat…

Having trouble making a decision?

You’re not alone.  Most people say that the more

important the decision, the harder it is to make.

Some decisions are not the kind that can be made

easily or by using sheer force of will.

Some decisions just take their own sweet time.

Some decisions seem like they have to make themselves.

Hurry Up and Wait

Some are like the “hurry up and wait” variety…

you have to wait to get more information first.

Or you have to wait to get clarity of your feelings.

Or there are other people or circumstances that

factor into this decision so you’re waiting on that.

The decision is not just yours to make right now.

Jump Into the Decision Boat!

If you’ve got this kind of decision to make,

you’re going to have to get comfortable with

this unique decision-making process.

This process is like floating down a stream,

merrily or not-so-merrily.

One Way or the Other

You are in your boat, rowing gently, and

you’re going to have to wait to see where the

stream is going to carry you.

You will eventually get to a place where your

boat will either go one way or the other.

Until you get to that place in the stream,

when the decision can be made, there’s

a few things you can be doing.

Keep Your Eyes Open

Here’s what you have to watch out for as you

are in your boat, waiting for more information

or other people to make their move, or whatever:

1.  Waterfalls

2.  Whirlpools

Over the Falls

Waterfalls are points where your boat is at risk

for going over.  You wait so long to make the

decision that you miss that crucial moment.

Then the decision really will make itself…

but not always in your best interest.

It’s like waiting to decide to get help for a

marriage or your child, and whoops!

You’re too late…over the falls you go.

Someone else decides it’s over or your kid

gets into major trouble with the law.

You have to pay attention to the signs that

it’s time for a decision to made, then act.

Stuck in a Whirlpool

Whirlpools are places where your boat also

is no longer going gently down the stream…

you’re stuck in a whirlpool, going around and

around and around…worrying and catastrophizing

but not making any progress toward a decision.

Here you’ve got to get moving down the stream

by trusting that the signs will become obvious

eventually…you’ve just got to keep gathering

information and pay attention.  And you can

learn to trust the process that is unfolding.

Merrily, Merrily, Merrily…

So your job while you’re waiting for the right

time or enough information to make a decision

is to keep moving down the stream, pay attention

to the signs that it’s time to go one way or the other,

and enjoy ride as much as you can.

And don’t forget that “life is just a dream!”
