A Poem for Christmas

garland

Comfort and Joy

I.

tiny strips of red and green paper
sticky fingers and Elmer’s glue
turn them into little loops
interlocking garland for the tree

a paper chain
if you make it just right
is hard to break

even if you take one end
and run laughing down the hall
so you can watch it fly behind you
like the tail of a Christmas kite

II.

a hundred baby möbius
speak infinity wrapped around
a dying evergreen
gently whispering to
it’s soft green needles
see, I came from you
I was made from you
paper from wood pulp
ashes to ashes
glitter to stardust

III.

his green branches reach upward
in the cold cloudless night
watching quiet cover the mountain
like a natal blessing

tomorrow
he will die and be reborn for the season
a gift

life in winter
a place for light in darkness
joy for a child sitting at her desk
gluing paper strips into garland
anticipating his arrival
